Every brand I worked with was stuck paying whatever the OTA decided to charge.
Before LumaBeacon, I spent years building the recommendation and search systems behind major OTA activity listings. My job was deciding which tours and activities travelers saw first.
From that seat, I watched the same story play out again and again. A travel brand would build real distribution through an OTA, get dependent on that traffic, and then watch commissions climb and terms get tighter, with no real way to push back. The platform that brought them customers also held all the leverage.
The brands with their own traffic were the only ones who could actually negotiate. The ones ranking on their own search terms, driving their own content, and taking direct bookings weren't at the mercy of a single platform's next policy change.
So I left to help build that for more travel brands. LumaBeacon is the team I wished existed back then: one that treats owned search and content as the way out of OTA dependency, not a side project.
